Central Valley Regional Bioethics Conference Set for October 18

CLOVIS, Calif. – The Central Valley Regional Bioethics Committee is proud to offer its annual conference, Contemporary Issues in Bioethics on Friday, October 18, 2024.

Co-sponsored by Kaweah Health Medical Center, Community Health System, Valley Children’s Hospital, Kaiser Permanente and Fresno State University, this event will feature local, regional, and national experts discussing critical bioethics topics that impact healthcare systems and communities across the Central Valley.

This year’s conference will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Clovis Community Medical Center – Marcus Radin Conference Center, 2755 Herndon Ave., in Clovis. The event will include a plenary session by internationally renowned social work leader, Terry Altilio, LCSW, author of “The Power of Language: Linking Word Choices to Inequities and Outcomes.” Terry will explore how the language we use can either enhance or hinder the delivery of equitable and effective healthcare, with a focus on how bioethics teams can support more inclusive communication within our diverse communities.

Additionally, Dr. Veena Howard and Dr. Andrew Fiala from the Fresno State University’s Department of Philosophy, will speak on the intersections of hope, religion and spirituality in complex medical care and decision-making.

Anthony Yamamoto, LCSW, a well-known regional ethicist, will offer an engaging discussion on how bioethics teams contribute to ethical decision-making within healthcare systems.

The day will conclude with a panel of local chaplains who will share their experiences of providing spiritual care in our diverse communities.

This conference promises a day filled of enriching dialogue and insights into the important ways in which bioethics impacts our healthcare and our lives.
